  • Hi Everyone,

I'm getting an error message on my Lenovo T60 laptop screen that says Hardware Malfunction, System Halted, contact your vendor. I has happened a few times now. I would be navigating the Net or watching a video on Youtube, when out of nothing I get the blue screen of death with this message... Panic, anxiety attack through my spine :o I don't know if a problem I'm having with the mouse and keyboard has anything to do with... sometimes the keyboard and mouse not work, so I have to reboot in order to work. I'm using an external mouse now, but having the same problem with the keyboard. Other than that, laptop working fine.

    Any help greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!!!

  • 12/31/11--11:45: Screen Started Showing Dark Shadowy Areas. (chan 1348905)
  • Hello.
Greetings I'm new to the community and I apologize if I’m posting in the wrong place.
I suddenly realized that the lcd screen of my dv7t-3100 Notebook started showing dark shadowy areas right around the top of the screen, I cleaned my laptop yesterday with a soft cloth impregnated with a foamy screen solution and removed some dust particles with compressed air; does anyone know what happened to the screen and what can I do to fix it?

I attached a picture of the screen, thank you very much in advance and happy new year.

  • 01/05/12--17:46: Dell Inspiron 1521 Black Screen (chan 1348905)
  • I have a Dell Inspiron 1521 and one night the screen suddenly went blank. When I rebooted the laptop, there was no image at all, only a black screen. The fan would run for a few seconds and then nothing. Just complete silence. I tried reseating the cable to the LCD, tried numerous other things, and nothing. Is there a way I can fix this because I can't afford to get a new laptop. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

  • 01/13/12--10:59: Future Laptops (chan 1348905)
  • Hello,

I am thinking about getting a new laptop in a few years, but want to check on something. We have had new processors come out over the last couple of years. However, the actual clock speed has changed little since then. It is still difficult to get to 3Ghz. Desktops, however, are past 4Ghz, even with the same processors. Desktop speeds have dramatically improved over the last couple of years, whereas laptop speeds have not.

So, my question is this: will laptop CPUs ever reach 4Ghz or beyond? How long do you think it would take them to advance to where desktop CPU speeds are today? How about the ones that will be based on Intel's new Ivy chipset coming out soon? I've been eagerly awaiting that.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you very much.

  • 01/15/12--17:21: Where Was This Machine When I Was Buying?! (chan 1348905)
  • Lenovo U400

I realize this isn't stupidly impressive or anything, but dang.

We need a point of comparison here:
MBP 13 - price is almost identical, and this is about the closest thing Apple has.

    Item --- Lenovo ---- Apple
Weight: 4.36Lbs 4.5 --- call this how you will.
    Construction: "one-piece aluminum" "Aluminum Unibody"
    Processor: i7 2620M (2.7Ghz) i7 2640 (2.8Ghz)
    Display: 14" Glossy 1366x768 13" 1280x800 glossy
GPU: AMD 6470m Intel HD 3000
    Battery: 7 hrs 7hrs

When you look at this, the machines are nearly identical. The big difference being the dedicated video card. That right there appears to be the ultimate light weight, portable machine that can still play a few games. I know I am impressed. Too bad I already have a workstation :D

Still, where was this 6 months ago?

edit: A few cool notes about the Lenovo:

    Quote

Breathable Keyboard, an Intel Advanced Cooling Technology that allows the PC to run cooler
on your lap by letting airflow through the keyboard

    Quote

Roll-cage technology protects internal components from damage.

So basically, it gets most of the business features - just not a matte display.

  • 01/18/12--03:09: Restoring Toshiba Satellite L775d (chan 1348905)
  • I was hoping someone here could help me!

I'm trying to restore the above model to OOB settings and it's giving me a hell of a time. Everything's been backed up & when I initiate the recovery it runs fine. Problem is once it finishes and boots up, the desktop appears normal until a screen pops up and says configuring computer. This went on for 30-40 minutes before auto rebooting and when it comes back up, the cmd.exe prompt pops up and the same configure screen comes up. As far as I can tell, it's not doing anything anymore, almost like it's stuck doing this. I let it go for well over an hour with no change & now I'm restoring it AGAIN to see if maybe it will work this time.

    Any suggestions?

  • 01/25/12--01:28: Choosing A Macbook Pro For Music Production (chan 1348905)
  • I'm looking to buy a Macbook Pro for music production, budget being $1700. The issue I'm facing is that I've been scouring the net for ideal configurations, but am stuck between the 13" 2.8 Ghz MBP and the 15" 2.2 Ghz quad core MBP. Also, these rumors of a possible March launch for a new MBP have done my head in.
I intend to run Ableton, FL Studio, Reason and Massive Synth on the laptop. Size isn't a problem for me as I don't mind lugging a 15" around for gigs.

Would appreciate any advice you guys have for me.

    Thanks :)

  • 01/25/12--10:42: Upgrading Laptop For Gaming (chan 1348905)
  • Hello,

I'd really like to get a PC or laptop for gaming, but being on a budget,
it's best if I try to upgrade the laptop I have instead. Apart from that,
I won't use the laptop for multiplayer games like BF3,etc. since I use my 360 for that.

I don't really have many "techie" friends that can point me in the right direction,
and the only that told me anything just told me to upgrade my RAM and something I can't
    remember.

Currently, I have a couple of games installed but the graphics whilst gaming aren't
that good and it's not entirely smooth gaming. I want to be able to play Dragon Age 1 & 2
    + the DLC and mods.

    Here are the specs:

  • 01/25/12--19:00: Screen Burned Out ? Is It Repairable ? (chan 1348905)
  • I have a 4 year old Acer Aspire laptop with a 15" screen and the screen backlight appears to be burned out. The computer appears to work properly and I can seen an extremely dim image, but the backlight is gone. I forced it to power down, and when it starts up there is a dim light at the left side of the screen for about a second and then it goes dark. The computer starts up normally with the familiar Windows startup music, so it does not appear to be a software or hard drive problem. Is it possible a weak power supply or has the screen died ? Do you think this is repairable, or should I look for a new computer ? About 2 months ago I repaired my 7 year old desktop, so it's not an immediate emergency, however, I've lost a bunch of emails, contacts and favorites and the old desktop is a real clunker running XP. Also, it lacks an SD card reader, so uploading camera photos is a PITA. So, my next question would be what would you recommend as a laptop replacement ? Should I stick with ACER or are other brands more reliable ?

  • 01/25/12--21:03: Getting Keys On A Keyboard Back On (chan 1348905)
  • So I was trying to clean my keyboard and I accidentally removed a key. I read somewhere to see how it was placed on to remove another. I did and couldn't get that one back one. Eventually after an hour or so I got them back on, but they were very stiff and were uncomfortable to use. I do have an extra keyboard that I use, but for road trips and stuff it would be great to have the built in keyboard.
I have pictures to show the metal hooks, and how to attach them. I know how on the right side of the keyboard but the left I can't get.
    Posted Image

I can get the right side under the metal hooks but not the left. I can't tell if it's suppose to go on the hook or under it.

Any help / video would be helpful. I have checked youtube & google for stuff, and got nothing. I am 98 % sure nothing is broken though.

    I have a HP Pavilion Dv9500 laptop.

    Thank you for your time!

  • 01/28/12--22:05: Wifi Disabled On Every Reboot (chan 1348905)
  • Win7 x64 pro SP1 HP dv5z-1000

I clean-installed Win7 and now the wifi card (Atheros 54g) is disabled every time the computer boots up.
Strangest thing I've ever seen. Right-click > enable restores wifi, but what on earth would cause this?
